Overview

A half-day course focusing on the much-revered ceramics from Song to Qing Dynasty. Scholar and curator Dr. Wang Guanyu will guide us to understand the key motifs and decorations, as well as the evolution in form and production.

Marco Almeida, Specialist, Head of Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, Christie's Asia Pacific will guide us to handle a few pieces to be offered in the auction, highlighting issues of connoisseurship and discussing recent collecting trends.

Dr. Wang Guanyu
Associate Curator (Antiquities)
Art Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Guanyu Wang is the Associate Curator (Antiquities) of Art Museum, CUHK. She is the curator of exhibition "Refilling the Interregnum: Newly Discovered Imperial Porcelains from Zhengtong, Jingtai and Tianshun Reigns (1436-1464) of the Ming Dynasty". With BA and MPhil at the School of Archaeology and Museology, Peking University on Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasties (960-1644 AD) Archaeology and Ceramics Archaeology, she received her Ph.D. at the Department of Fine Arts, The Chinese University of Hong Kong on the History of Chinese Ceramics.

She has participated in two excavations that were awarded Top Ten archaeological Discoveries of China. In 2009, she was elected to be the representative of East Asia Region in the World Archaeological Congress Student Council (WACSC). In 2010 and 2011, she was invited to participate in the research project "China Westwards" organized by the Chinese Civilization Center of the City University of Hong Kong. She was the 2014/15 Fellow honored by the J. S. Lee Memorial Fellowship Programme and the Co-Investigator of 2018/19 GRF Project "Ming Princes and Porcelain: The Porcelain Production and Consumption of Princely Households in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)". She is currently focusing on the research of the production, trade and consumption of Chinese porcelains during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and the interactions of material civilization between the East and West in the early globalization.

Specialist, Head of Department, Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art
Christie’s Asia Pacific

Marco has almost twenty years of experience in Chinese art, having worked in the specialist departments in the auction industry. Since joining Christie’s in 2008 he has been closely involved in the sale of several important collections, including the record-breaking pair of Yongzheng doucai bowls sold in May 2009. His major areas of expertise are porcelain, especially that of the 18th century, and works of art, especially jade carvings. Having been born in Brazil Marco’s first language is Portuguese, but he was educated in Europe and is bilingual in English and fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Italian and Spanish. He holds a BA Honours degree in Chinese language and went on to obtain a Masters degree in the History of Art and Archaeology from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
