Please join us to a private study tour, a journey into the world of contemporary Japanese design. In this once-in-a-lifetime experience, we will discover the inside world of kogei, the traditional crafts of Japan, as they are being revisited and practiced today by some of the country’s most notable artists.
The study tour is designed for those interested in contemporary design, crafts, and for those passionate about the allure of Japanese culture. It focuses on visits in private studios of artists working in clay, paper, metal, fibers, lacquer, and bamboo, typically concentrated in villages and towns which have traditionally employed those crafts; such as the spar resort town of Beppu, home of hot springs, where bamboo is grown and harvested historically recognized for the art of bamboo; or Mino City where Washi paper originated in the 8th century, and where Japan’s leading paper artists work today. In addition to art studios, we will be visiting remarkable architecture sites, which are outside of the touristic narrative.
