This is a cross-disciplinary course that provides you with a set of skills and knowledge that are highly transferable to the art world and its professional practices. Rather than being strictly academic, the course offers those wishing to receive a certificate on completion the opportunity to submit a plan for an art business using the information delivered in the sessions. 

 

Led by experts in their fields, this virtual course will highlight the key aspects of the art world and its markets allowing you to interact directly with the lecturers and will also provide a key opportunity to network with like-minded people. Whether you are interested in launching an art business, thinking of working in the art world or looking to change your career, this course will offer you all the essential information required to get started. 

 

Academic Profiles 

Dr Thomas Flynn

Dr Tom Flynn is a graduate of the University of Sussex and the Royal College of Art, completing his doctorate at the University of Sussex in 1998. From 1998-2000 Tom was Henry Moore Foundation Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Sussex, organising an international exhibition on Rodin’s connections with the United Kingdom.

A former journalist at The Art Newspaper, his writing has appeared in numerous international art market publications. He has held board positions with art price data company Invaluable and the contemporary print retailer Eyestorm. He has published widely on the global art market, contemporary sculpture, museology, and art and design history and is an accredited lecturer with The Arts Society.

He was Senior Lecturer at Kingston College of Art from 2010-2017, directing the RICS-Accredited MA in Art Appraisal (Professional Practice) and has taught at Sussex University; IESA (Paris and London); and Richmond, the American University in London.

In 2017 he co-founded with Angelina Giovani the art provenance research agency Flynn & Giovani (FlynnGiovani.com), of which he is non-Executive director.

 

Nico Epstein

Nico Epstein is a curator, art historian and art advisor with a career-long involvement in art tech. He is a partner and COO of Artvisor, a London based contemporary art consultancy; having worked in the online art space for the past 10 years. Epstein has helped to arrange more than 20 exhibitions of contemporary art throughout Europe, New York and Hong Kong, focusing mostly on artists of his generation. He is currently overseeing the expansion of Artvisor’s technology and the formation of the art collection for the new W Hotel opening in Rome this autumn. Epstein also acts as a consultant for Frieze, organizing bespoke tours for their VIP clients. He has lectured on contemporary art and its markets at Bocconi, The Courtauld, and University College London among other leading universities. His most recent book, an analysis of Susan Sontag’s On Photography, was published on Routledge in 2018. His last course at Christie's Education was New Dynamics: The Digital Contemporary Art World.

 

Amanda Gray

Amanda Gray is a Partner in Mishcon Private, specialising in Art Law and the related field of Luxury Assets. She is Practice Lead for Art Law and chairs Mishcon's firm-wide multi-disciplinary Luxury Assets Group. Amanda is valued by her clients for her commercial, flexible approach and depth of knowledge across a diverse range of legal problems faced by those operating within the art market and luxury assets fields.

In addition to her Art Law practice, Amanda, as a long standing private client lawyer, has been able to bring her experience of dealing with sensitive personal situations to assisting bereaved families with inquests and advising clients on a range of medical negligence issues and loss of mental capacity.

An art law specialist with over 13 years of experience, she is valued by her clients for her commercial and solution driven approach and depth of knowledge. Her client base includes collectors, dealers, auction houses, artists, public and private institutions and foundations. She assists clients across a diverse range of contentious and non-contentious legal problems faced by those operating within the art market and luxury assets fields. These include sale and purchase agreements, art and antique collection management, loan and agency agreements, artists' resale rights regulations, special projects, bringing new discoveries to the market place and advising the art market on anti-money laundering regulations.

Her specialist contentious work includes claims arising from due diligence issues including authentication and title claims, disputes arising out of breaches of contract, negligence and misrepresentation. Matters are often international, high value, and high profile with significant commercial and personal implications for the reputation and legacy of those involved.

As a leading member of our multi-disciplinary Luxury Assets Group, Amanda provides advice to clients on luxury assets including classic cars, bloodstock and jewellery, each with nuances individual to their respective fields.

Amanda is a Trustee of the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA); the pro-bono General Counsel for Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft, Sussex, which houses the permanent collection of works by the Ditchling Guild and is a member of the Responsible Art Market committee, London Chapter.

 

Simon Craig

Simon Craig started his career in 1979 in the Commercial Claims Department of the Norwich Union, based in Leeds.  He held a number of positions in the UK prior to moving to Italy in 1991.  In 1997 Simon established his own company and set up The Acme Loss Adjusting and Risk Survey Company S.r.l.

In 2003 he co-founded the separate activity of C&N Insurance Services, specialising in the undertaking of Lloyd`s Coverholder Audit assignments.

 In 2014 and after working for thirty years as a Loss Adjuster, Simon established the specialist fine art insurance practice of Untitled (1960) S.r.l.

 Simon is a Chartered Insurance Practitioner and a member of the Institute of Art and Law, and holds the Diploma in Art Profession Law and Ethics (DipAple).

 

Lucy Sollitt

Lucy is a curator, writer, consultant and artist mentor. Lucy has been exploring the creative and critical implications of emerging technologies on art for over 15 years. She writes, curates, devises strategy and contributes to policy development - for organisations including FACT, Serpentine, Rhizome, Goethe Institut, Arts Council England and UK government. Lucy is a leading voice on how technologies are changing the art market and enabling fairer art economies. She is author of the widely referenced Future of the Art Market report (commissioned by Creative United with UCL, DACS, Creative Scotland, Arteia, Somerset House) and curator of the Redefining Value in the Art Market series.

The Art Market Ecosystem 

Who’s who in the Art World? This session will introduce you to all the key players within the art market landscape and explain their roles and how they impact on the the buying and selling of artworks. Presented by Dr Tom Flynn who has had years of experience observing the art world as well as participating in it, this lecture will set the scene for the entire programme. 

 

Payment Structures in the Art World 

Nico Epstein, Art Historian and Advisor presents this interesting and insightful session on how art is bought and sold through various art world institutions. From galleries to auction houses, this lecture will provide you with essential information about how money changes hands in the art market. 

 

The Online Art Market 

Nico Epstein returns in this lecture to explain the ever-evolving world of the online art market. With extensive examples of diverse platforms and businesses, this session outlines the many opportunities available to those interested in developing an online art gallery or one of the many other retail or advisory possibilities. 

 

Art Law: Recent Trends and Developments 

The first of our Art Law sessions looks at what is currently happening within the art world in terms of legal structures. This lecture will look at the legal implications the global pandemic and Brexit, for example, have had on the art market. 

 

Contract Law 

What can go wrong when transacting in the art world? Our legal experts from Mischon de Reya present this session on the due diligence that is required when working within the market. Using real-life case studies as examples, this lecture is fundamental if you are thinking of establishing an art world business. 

 

Fraud Law 

This session of our series of Art Law lectures looks at art fraud and the legal frameworks around this. Using global case-studies to underline the significance of these criminal offences and their impact on the art market, this lecture is indispensable for those entering an art world career. 

 

Intellectual Property Rights 

Our final legal session presents the Intellectual Property Rights that function within the art market. In this lecture we address topics such as what is intellectual property? copyright, artists resale rights, licensing and branding.  

 

Value and Price 

Dr Tom Flynn returns to Negotiating the Art Market to explain the purpose of valuing art, what are the key determinants of value associated with an artwork and attempts to answer the questions - how does the art world put a price on art? 

 

Insurance 

Very often not thought about but a vital element within the business of art, this session on Insurance explains the complex functions of this structure and the importance it holds for those buying and collecting art. 

 

Marketing for the Art World

In this session the Head of Audience Insight, Judith Comyn and the Head of Campaigns, Abi Laughton from the Tate galleries take us through how a large state run art institution markets its exhibitions to its visitors with a focus on strategies and key challenges. This lecture provides yet further essential knowledge for those people interested in working within the art market. 

 

Fine Art Logistics 

Moving art from one site to another can be extremely complicated; In this lecture, David Preston provides details on the best ways of transporting works of art as well the necessary information that is required to make sure this is carried out safely and within the rules and regulations of global borders. 

 

The Future of the Art Market 

Lucy Sollitt closes the programme with this lecture on The Future of the Art Market. Here, Lucy takes us through how the market has reached its current position and posits the factors that will determine how the market will perform going forward; vital information for anyone engaged in the art world or is looking towards a career in this fascinating industry.
