A Peek Behind the Photograph: Conversations with the Dealers

Join us in Conversations with the Dealers

Overview Schedule Academic Profile Contact & Additional Information
Overview

Overview

Geared toward photographers and the curious collector, this class goes behind-the-scenes to have honest and open conversations with prominent photography dealers from London, San Francisco, Richmond (Virginia) to New York City.   Class #1 sets the stage and provides the issues collectors might want to ask a dealer along with the due diligence needed to buy a photograph -- from signature indications, limited vs. open editions, to negative vs print date. Seven distinct dealers will then discuss their gallery’s ‘brand’, how they meet the artists they represent, setting prices, how new talent is discovered to the challenges of running a gallery in today’s world. There is something for everyone: from dealers who focus on classic, modern and specialized themes. Join us as we peek behind the curtain into the fine art photography marketplace.
Schedule

Schedule

8 sessions – 1 hour each (twice a week)

Participating Galleries

Robert Mann Gallery (NYC) - Feb 17, 2022

Founded in 1985, Robert Mann Gallery represents an international roster of prominent contemporary artists that continue to push the role of the photographic medium through unique visions and stylistic innovation. The gallery's program includes a strong group of women artists many of whom use narrative-based work to tell stories through image (Holly Andres, Julie Blackmon, Cig Harvey) as well as a core collection of landscape artists (Jeff Brows, Murray Fredericks, Michael Kenna, Maroesjka Lavigne). The gallery pairs this with an outstanding collection of 20th Century masters including works by Ansel Adams, Elisabeth Hase, Aaron Siskind, and Margaret Watkins, among others. Caroline Wall, Director of the Robert Mann Gallery, graduated from McGill University with a degree in Art History and began her career in the art world at the O’Hara Gallery before joining the team at Robert Mann Gallery in 2006.  With the gallery, Caroline has participated in many national and international art fairs and works with numerous contemporary photographers and estates organizing both solo and curated group exhibitions.  Caroline is a member of the Board of Directors of AIPAD.

Paul M. Hertzmann, Inc (San Francisco) – Feb 22, 2022

Susan Herzig and Paul Hertzmann are dealers in fine vintage 19th and 20th Century photography including 20th-Century Modernism, Photo-Succession, post-World War II innovations, 19th Century photographs of the American West and unusual or exceptional 19th-Century photographic albums.  With more than 40 years of experience in the field, they share their expertise often with museums, private collectors, and colleagues. Their knowledge of the art market, their connoisseurship, and extensive research enable them to offer important photographs of rare quality and importance.

Staley Wise Gallery (NYC) – February 24, 2022

Etheleen Staley and Takouhy Wise opened Staley-Wise Gallery in 1981 with an exhibition of Horst P. Horst photographs, and continue to specialize in fashion photography which they introduced to the gallery world. In addition to fashion, the gallery exhibits an extensive collection of portraiture, landscape, still-life, and nudes, all with an emphasis on style. Staley-Wise Gallery works with museums, private institutions, and collectors worldwide.

Gitterman Gallery (NYC) – March 1, 2022

Gitterman Gallery was founded in 2003, after Tom Gitterman was in the field for 13 years working for Pace/MacGill Gallery [intern], Zabriskie Gallery and Howard Greenberg Gallery. In addition to representing artists, estates and private collections, Gitterman maintains an inventory of selective work that spans the history of the medium in a full range of styles and periods including established artists as well as artists overlooked by the history of the medium. The gallery has 30 years of experience in the field and specializes in connoisseur level photographic art from the 19th Century to Contemporary.

Atlas Gallery (London) – March 3, 2022

Ben Burdett founded the Atlas Gallery in 1994. It is one of the foremost galleries worldwide dealing exclusively in photography in all forms, representing a diverse range of photographers. From classic vintage photography, photojournalism and fashion to experimental and art photography. The gallery hosts approximately six exhibitions a year and has a presence at international art fairs including Paris Photo, Photo London, Photo Shanghai, Art Miami and Art Basel Hong Kong. Ben set up Atlas after a successful career in fine art and antiquarian books, becoming one of the top experts in 19th Century travel and exploration.

Candela Gallery (Richmond, Va) – March 8, 2022

Candela’s mission is to support contemporary photography through the exhibition and educational programming, publication opportunities, and community-building. Gordon Stettinius founded Candela Books in 2010 as an independent photobook publisher and founded Candela Gallery in 2011.  The gallery produces 7-8 feature exhibitions a year; one or two book-related exhibitions each year; and one unbridled, free-for-all, group exhibition each summer.  The annual summer exhibition, Unbound!, raises funds and acquires work from the annual exhibition for the Candela Collection, which will be donated, ultimately, to another permanent collection.

Hans P. Kraus Jr Fine Photographs (NYC) - March 10, 2022

Hans P. Kraus Jr. has been established in New York since 1984 as a dealer in 19th and early 20th Century photographs. From 1980 to 1983, he worked for Christie’s in London and New York. The gallery has represented and placed a number of significant collections, including the Rubel Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Fox Talbot Archive from Lacock Abbey at the Bodleian Library, Oxford. The gallery publishes monographs on early photographers, and catalogues under the series title Sun Pictures. The gallery occasionally collaborates with contemporary artists who are influenced and inspired by the work and techniques of the earliest photographers.
