Overview
Collecting modern and contemporary design has become one of the most dynamic, influential territories in the international marketplace, standing at the forefront of style, taste, and the curated interior of the 21st century. While at first it was largely fueled by the fine art market, collecting design has emerged as a discipline in its own right, one which dominates interiors, and attracts those who value living with good design, collectors with passion for sustainable, stylish, and personal spaces.
During the past 2 1/2 decades, the collectible design market has emerged as a global barometer of trend forecasting, signifying the high-brow domestic culture, while inspiring scholarly analysis, art fairs, museum exhibitions, and monographs. It has come forward as a source of taste-making, generating market reports, art fairs, museum exhibitions, research projects, scholarship, monographs, and endless headlines.
The series 'Collecting Design: History, Collections, Highlights,' started by design historian and connoisseur Daniella Ohad 12 years ago as the first comprehensive study program dedicated to the topic. It comes to explore this fascinating territory by examining the current state of the marketplace. In this ten-session study journey, themes, periods, and styles are being investigated and analyzed, highlighting the best design ever created.
Through dialogues with dealers, critics, collectors, curators, designers, and writers, we examine auction records, relevant connoisseurship, major design events, and the stories behind the scenes. The program provides a unique experience as it brings the audience to the forefront of the world of design. Additionally, a personalized live report from the Design Miami, the global forum for collectible design will be brought to our audience. All participants will be invited to the VIP opening of Design Miami on December 6th and will be welcome to take part in the film we will create for this series.

Daniella Ohad is a design influencer, historian, educator, writer, talk show hostess, curator, keynote speaker, who received her PhD degree from the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design and Culture. For the past two decades, she has been committed to education in the field of design culture; history and theory; interiors; material culture; contemporary design; connoisseurship; and the decorative arts. She has taught in some of the world’s leading art institutions, including the School of Visual Arts, Pratt Institute, Parsons New School for Design, Cooper Union, and the New York School of Interior Design, and has spoken in conferences and events worldwide. Her articles and critiques have been published in magazines and in peer-review journals, and she has curated and hosted such programs as Dialogues with Design Legends at the 92 Street Y; the talk show Spring/Harvest Dialogues; the video series The Collector; programs for the Italian network Skyarte. Ohad is a moderator and speaker in design talks and events and has hosted some of the leading talents in the world of architecture and design on stage in such venues as Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design, Sotheby’s, Museum of Arts and Design, Center for Architecture/AIA, Design Miami, and more. She has been a member in acquisition committees of NYC museums, and her blog Daniella on Design attracts hundreds of thousands of readers weekly. She lives and works in New York City. |
