Overview
Urban art, frequently referred to as street art, is the most egalitarian form of visual art, reflecting the ideals of the culture and society from which it is produced with an iconoclastic, untamed authenticity. Broadly defined, urban art encompasses any aesthetic medium that is semi-permanent, situated outdoors and charged with an urgency to communicate. Although the spectrum of this definition can technically include prehistoric cave drawings, the intentionality of urban art as it is understood today is a more modern phenomenon. In this course, we'll immerse ourselves in the urban art world through conversations with urban artists who continue to redefine the field.
