From Cocktails to Conservation: Caring for your Collection

This course will cover five main components of collections care; Collections Management, Insurance, Loss Prevention and Risk Management, Installation and Conservation, and Packing and Shipping.

Overview Schedule Additional Information
Overview

Overview

Like a newborn, a piece of art doesn’t come with instructions for its care and handling. Yet understanding the logistics of art ownership is crucial to maintaining the art object’s long-term aesthetic and financial value.  This course will cover six main components of collections care, including a session on digital art and NFTs.

First, we will discuss the fundamentals of tracking and organizing your collection and all of the accompanying paperwork, which is important to archive for insurance, appraisal and tax scenarios. Then we move on the understanding the coverages and exclusions of art insurance policies. Approaching your collection with a mindset of loss prevention – when buying, selling, moving and installing art, is critical to reducing the possibility of physical damage to your work. Proper installation, packing and shipping, and even pro-active consultation with a conservator are crucial components of loss prevention as well. The emergence of NFTs as a way to monetize and provide ownership proof for both digital and physical artwork is a trend we will discuss as well, including the unique risks and display challenges.

Topics covered:

  • Collections management
  • Insurance
  • Digital art and NFTs
  • Loss prevention + risk management
  • Installation + conservation
  • Storage, packing and transportation

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the basics of collection management to safeguard the aesthetic and financial value of your collection
  • Ask informed questions about insurance coverage for your collection while at home, in other locations, and on loan
  • Create a risk management plan for your collection
  • Recognize and locate professionals in the fields of appraisals and conservation
  • Install your collection with an understanding of agents of deterioration to minimize the possibility of loss
  • Understand the fundamentals of NFTs and Blockchain technology
  • Comprehend the exposures of transportation and storage, and pro-actively mitigate them

Schedule

Schedule

Class 1: Collections Management

We will discuss the fundamentals of collection management including mission statements, appropriate documentation; Object ID; fundamentals of appraisals; valuations for insurance and donations, and collection management systems.

Class 2: Insurance for Collection

What are the benefits of a specialized art insurance policy versus insuring your collection on your home-owners policy? Learn about policy exclusions, endorsements, special terms and conditions for art collections as well as valuation clauses.

Class 3: NFTs, Blockchain & Provenance

In the rapidly evolving and tumultuous market for NFTs, we contextualize the NFT hype within the art world, and separate the crypto-punks from the digital artists. We’ll also discuss the technological implications of Blockchain on documenting provenance.

Class 4: Risk management for Natural Catastrophes

Windstorms, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and fire can create catastrophic losses to personal property. The geographic location of the collection exposes a collection to a variety of environmental factors. We’ll review the elements of creating a disaster management plan for your collection.

Class 5: Best Practices for Installation and Conservation

Mindful collectors install their collection with foresight and attention to the perils within their home. We’ll review agents of deterioration and how can you curate your collection following best practices to minimize loss and damage.

Class 6: Storage, Packing and Transportation

Art on the move increases the possibility of loss and damage. We’ll discuss packing and shipping 101, and discuss international shipping, taxes and customs, and review security protocols for home and storage facilities.
