Overview
Explore four-hundred years of vibrant art by women artists with our unique and engaging new online course. Named deliberately to question art history’s devotion to the (male) Old Masters, ‘Old Mistresses’ will bring to light lesser-known female talents, connecting you with pioneering women artists who challenged the societal norms of their eras.
Written and presented by favourite online tutor, Jacqui Ansell, this innovative course is designed to enrich and complement our existing art history portfolio by introducing artists (and approaches to their work) often overlooked in conventional narratives.
Each of the three modules offers a wealth of beautifully illustrated content, interspersed with stimulating study activities. Judy Chicago’s thought-provoking artwork, The Dinner Party, acts as a launchpad to enable us to explore the careers and reputations of renowned artists such as Sofonisba Anguissola, Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Rosa Bonheur, and many more. The course provides a deep dive into the lives and works of these influential artists, offering a rich tapestry of artistic innovation and social context. The artists that you learn about will enable you to question existing artistic 'canons', and to formulate your own informed opinions.
Whether you're a seasoned art historian or eager to enter the world of art, this course offers an immersive and enlightening experience. By the end of your journey you'll have developed a deeper understanding and appreciation for the trailblazing women artists of the past.
