In this half day course, an art historian will speak on the historical context and aesthetic concepts that are key to understanding and appreciating Chinese paintings.
The afternoon concludes with a handing session and a guided tour, where a specialist will offer insights into the market and the latest collecting trends.

Dr. CHAN Kwun Nam, Phil Associate Curator of Painting and Calligraphy, Art Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
CHAN Kwun Nam (Phil) received his BA, M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Fine Arts, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), majoring in the history of Chinese art. He is now the associate curator of painting and calligraphy at the Art Museum, CUHK. With a primary research interest in painting and calligraphy from the Ming and Qing dynasties to modern times, Chan specializes in the relationship between Chinese poetry and paintings, as well as the history of connoisseurship and collection. He has participated in a number of research projects and exhibitions on Chinese paintings and calligraphy, including Majestic Vistas: Selected Landscape Paintings from the Collection of the Art Museum, CUHK (2022-23) and Sincere Brush: Works of Ting Yin-yung Courtesy of His Students and Friends in the Department of Fine Arts, CUHK (2018). Chan is also one of the authors of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, an online catalogue of the Seattle Art Museum (sponsored by the Getty Foundation, 2011-13), The Bei Shan Tang Legacy: Chinese Calligraphy, Rubbings of Stone Engraving and Model Calligraphy, and Painting (Art Museum, CUHK, 2014-19), and Minghua Quanji: Volume of Dong Qichang (Zhejiang University, 2019). He was awarded the J. S. Lee Memorial Fellowship (2018-19) for work in the P. Y. and Kinmay W. Tang Center for East Asian Art and the Princeton University Art Museum.
