In this two-day course, participant's will have the opportunity to investigate objects and artworks through hands-on workshops. By combining theoretical knowledge with practical experiences, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of how to handle, move, document, and care for artworks responsibly. In addition to these sessions, participants will also be taken through the cataloguing process; a fundamental asset of managing collections or gallery inventories.
Highlights of the course include exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the Christie's warehouses, where you will see where art is stored, as well as a guided visit to the V&A’s Gilbert Collection with curator Alice Minter, offering firsthand guidance in curatorial practices. Additionally, a visit to Simon Gillespie's restoration studio will provide an opportunity to observe expert restorers at work, deepening your understanding of preservation and restoration techniques.
By the end of the course, you will be equipped with the practical knowledge and confidence to handle and manage artworks in a professional setting, making this an invaluable foundation for careers in the art world.
For in-depth expertise, participants may need further training and experience. Additionally, any practical exercises involving actual artworks should be conducted with the utmost care and consideration for the artworks' safety and integrity.
