Overview

In partnership with The Robert Chang Art Education Charitable Foundation, Christie’s Education is delighted to present Arts of China Livestreamed Lecture Series: Chinese Art and the World, and Imperial Taste and Chinese Art. Chinese Art and the World, running from August 26th to 30th, will explore the global footprint of Chinese art.

From ancient exchanges along the Silk Road to the enduring Western fascination with the once-mythical East, the cultural and artistic traditions of Chinese civilisation have long captivated the world’s imagination. From Hong Kong and Tokyo to London and New York, across major art centres of the world today, Chinese works of art highlight important museum collections and remain a major collecting category in the global art market.

Led by art historian Nixi Cura, this 5-day lecture series traces the global footprint of Chinese art across five different regions—Japan & Korean, Southeast Asia, The Middle East, Europe and America.  It showcases how intercultural exchanges and global trade propelled artistic evolution and fuelled the passionate collecting of Chinese art. Exploring the transformation of Chinese artistic traditions through cultural diffusion, trade, and imitation efforts, the lectures will cover the creation of unique styles including European Delftware, Japanese suiboku-ga, and Thai Benjarong.

The lecture series goes on to explore the exporting of Chinese porcelain to Europe, manifesting into an aesthetics of chinoiserie which captivated 18th century European taste and society. The course concludes with a special lecture dedicated to exploring prominent collections of Chinese art in America, highlighting the important scholarship and connoisseurship that has developed in the country through a network of dealers, collectors, and scholars.
