Overview
Design in the City is a series of 8 visits, exploring some of NYC’s most intriguing talents and the season's most exciting design events. Focusing on design culture, architecture, furniture, and interiors, we are set to examine periods, styles, and idioms in modern and contemporary design and decorative arts through material on display at New York City’s major collections, museums, private galleries, art fairs, historic houses, and auction houses.

Daniella Ohad is a design influencer, historian, educator, writer, talk show hostess, curator, keynote speaker, who received her PhD degree from the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design and Culture. For the past two decades, she has been committed to education in the field of design culture; history and theory; interiors; material culture; contemporary design; connoisseurship; and the decorative arts. She has taught in some of the world’s leading art institutions, including the School of Visual Arts, Pratt Institute, Parsons New School for Design, Cooper Union, and the New York School of Interior Design, and has spoken in conferences and events worldwide.
Her articles and critiques have been published in magazines and in peer-review journals, and she has curated and hosted such programs as Dialogues with Design Legends at the 92 Street Y; the talk show Spring/Harvest Dialogues; the video series The Collector; programs for the Italian network Skyarte. Ohad is a moderator and speaker in design talks and events and has hosted some of the leading talents in the world of architecture and design on stage in such venues as Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design, Sotheby’s, Museum of Arts and Design, Center for Architecture/AIA, Design Miami, and more. She has been a member in acquisition committees of NYC museums, and her blog Daniella on Design attracts hundreds of thousands of readers weekly. She lives and works in New York City.

Visit to Private Collection
He was born in 1933 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and became one of the most notable collectors of objects by the American Studio Movement. This tour will be led by the exhibition curator.
February 28
Gallery Visit
They are both graduates from the Ecole Camondo in Paris, where they first met before opening their award-winning firm in 1999. They have since worked for such top-class brands as Cartier, Artemide, L’Oréal, and Yamagiwa. Through their minimal Japanese-French design aesthetic, they seek to integrate subtle references to nature in the everyday interiors and objects they create. The tour of their solo show will be led by the designers in conversation with Daniella.
March 7
Gallery Visit
He is considered one of the leading figures in the design world since the beginning of his career in the 60s. His work can be found in many museum collections across the globe, and he is notable for forgoing innovative boundaries between art, design and industry. This tour will be led by the artist and by the curator in conversation with Daniella
March 14
Studio Visit:
Almost since graduating from Colombia School of Architecture, this architect decided to devote his life and career to create bespoke, unique furniture. Like the classic American muscle cars, he artfully shapes metal with sheer willpower and constant experimenting to turn the mundane and brutish into graceful beauty. This visit to his studio in Red Hook Brooklyn will be led by the artist who will demonstrate his techniques.
March 21
Asia Week.
Visiting two exhibitions focusing on Japanese contemporary design. One of clay art and the other bamboo art, and both illuminate some of the leading talents in Japan. The two tours will be led by the curators in conversation with Daniella.
April 18
Studio Visit
This artist creates furniture in clay. Each one unique, each different, as his pieces are perceived as works of art, characterized by abstract patterns that reference New York City’s ineffable energy. In this tour, the artist will reveal his techniques, vision, and philosophy, while demonstrating the processes.
April 25
Museum Visit
In celebrating the reopening of this museum after years of renovation by the award-winning architect, who devised an architecture program that comes to shape the future of the institution, this private tour led by the Director of the Museum will highlight the spectacular story of this NY Museum which is the world’s leading force in its own area.
May 2
Studio + Gallery Visit
The work of this award-winning architect/ceramicist will be the highlight of this session. We are going to start with a visit to her studio where she will demonstrate her personal technique, telling the fascinating story of her career and identity, which has brought her work to museum collections across the globe. We are going to continue the tour in a solo exhibition of her wok in a newly-opened gallery.
