Christie’s Education Asia is pleased to launch Transacting in the Art World: A Legal and Practical Guide, where the world’s leading auction house takes you to demystify the art world by introducing the most important legal and practical issues that impact artistic production, value creation and market transactions. Through real life cases, lawyers and experts will share practical know-how on interacting and transacting in the art market, as well as on building art businesses and managing collections and legacies.
This accessible, cross-disciplinary course offers an essential guide on the legal and practical aspects of creating, buying, selling and collecting art in today’s global art market. With the main speaker being a PRC qualified lawyer, and other speakers from Hong Kong and Europe, this course offers legal perspectives from both the law of the PRC and international jurisdictions.
This is a practical course suitable for lawyers and other professionals who are interested in the art world, as well as young collectors and art career beginners, especially in the context of the Greater China region.

Angell Xi

Ms. Angell Xi has 26 years of experiences in legal practice and business management, as a recognized legal expert in art, IP licensing, luxury and fashion industries, as well as in private client, M&A, restructuring and compliance fields. She is also one of the first lawyers to advise on AI, NFT, Metaverse in Art, Culture, Luxury and Fashion industries.
As a leading art lawyer in Asia, Ms. Xi advises clients on a wide range of legal issues related to art creation, transaction, collection, promotion, protection, art finance, investment, philanthropy, business operation, licensing, performance, etc.
Ms. Xi’s clients include international and Chinese museums, cultural heritage conservation and restoration institutions, art research and education institutions, and China’s cultural and tourism government authorities. She also advises artists, collectors, including individuals and corporate or family offices, as well as commercial players, including galleries, agencies, dealers, auction houses, art investment and finance institutions such as art funds and trustee companies. She recently also advises art technology companies, such as e-commence and media companies.
Ms. Xi is Senior Vice Chair of IBA Art, Cultural Institution and Heritage Law Committee, International Board Member of Licensing International, Member of IBA Private Client and Individual Tax Committee, Member of Art Law Foundation and the Responsible Art Market (The RAM). Ms. Xi was appointed as Postgraduate Tutor for KoGuan Law School of Shanghai Jiaotong University. She has lectured at Christie’s Education in courses on art law and NFTs.

Laurens Kasteleijn

Laurens founded Art Law Services in Hong Kong over a decade ago and expanded to Amsterdam early 2020. As a former art gallery director and corporate M&A lawyer, Laurens advises and represents the whole array of participants in the international art world, with a particular focus on legal issues related to fine art and other creative industries.
Laurens regularly teaches and writes about art law and the international art market.

Sara Mao
Director
Christie’s Education Asia Pacific
Sara Mao is the Director for Christie’s Education in Asia Pacific, overseeing the development of programmes and partnerships across Hong Kong, China, and South East Asia. Sara joined Christie’s in 2008 and was appointed Specialist Head of Sale for Chinese Modern Paintings in 2015, and then as Director for Christie’s Education in 2018.
Sara has curated over ten seasons of auctions for some of the most iconic paintings in the field of Chinese paintings, nurturing client relationships with seasoned collectors and new buyers, and leading the growth of the category through securing consignments globally for auction and private sales. She was responsible for spearheading record-breaking sales of Fu Baoshi’s The Song of the Pipa Player for HKD204.8 million, and Zhang Daqian’s Ancient Temples Amidst Clouds for HKD102.4 million, in 2017.
Bringing her specialist experience to education, she currently leads programmes in Asian Art, Art Business and Luxury Connoisseurship, with a focus on Women Artists and Art & Tech. She was the curator for Christie’s Art + Tech Summit “Mixed Realities” in 2019, and co-convenor for Christie’s Education’s first online academic conference “The Chinese Art Market”, in 2020.
Sara is also an auctioneer for Christie’s, supporting numerous charity auctions including Save the Children, Ronald McDonald House, Make a Wish Foundation, The National Kidney Foundation (SNG), and others.
After receiving her B.A. in Philosophy & English Literature at the University of York (UK), Sara acquired her Graduate Diploma in Law from BPP Law School (UK) and a Master of Letters in History of Art and Connoisseurship, with a concentration in Chinese art, from Christie’s Education and the University of Glasgow.
